This is the third and last book in the Bow Street Runners series by Lisa Kleypas, and oh my, what an ending it is. I just loved it. Superb. Ms Kleypas did it again. This will definitely go to my rereads. I would recommend this one too!
Our hero for this book is John Sydney (he prefers Nick though) and he is a virgin at the beginning of the book. He had formed a “friendship” with Gemma, the owner of a brothel. I don’t particularly like this friendship, though she did teach John all he needed to know in bed. I should be happy because he stuck with one woman for a long time, but I just can’t find it in myself to appreciate Gemma for what she’s done. Do I like John? Yes. He has a dark history that made him reluctant to open up to Charlotte. I feel sorry for him for having to go through that, but that made his character all the more interesting. He doesn’t share the bed with Lottie, literally, because of his nightmares. Who wouldn’t have nightmares after going through what he got through in the prison hulk? I just wished that he’d trusted Lottie more, let her heal him. He did, eventually, but it would’ve made the early days of their marriage comfortable. The heroine of this book is Charlotte Howard or Lottie, for short. I actually admire the courage of this lady. If I were in her position, I wouldn’t know what to do. Instead of bowing down to Lord Radnor, she braved out and faced the world on her own. Good thing John offered for her, they’re good together. I rather hate her parents for making her go through that predicament, very selfish if I may say so. It was a good thing that the viscountcy was redeemed for John and in a blink of an eye, Lottie became a viscountess. I love the chemistry between the main characters. The early days of their relationship (when Lottie didn’t know he was a Runner hunting her), they were already flirting with each other. They cannot resist each other’s charms. And when they married, they were reluctant with each other at first, but in the end they just gave in. Oh my, what would it feel like to be in Lottie’s shoes? Sigh.The best side character for this book goes to Marcus Marsden, Earl of Westcliff. If you are a fan of Ms Kleypas, you’d know who this aristocrat is. And the most hated character(s) goes to Lottie’s parents. No need for explanations.
My favorite scene would be when John saved Lottie from falling, then realized she’s the one he’s been looking for. I had goosebumps in that scene. I could just imagine John’s face! The next was when I found out that he will be the viscount again. I’m relieved, I thought he was never going to inherit what was rightfully his. I believe that he deserves that title, what with all that he had gone through. Another scene that I loved (or not so much because of what was actually happening) was when Lottie revealed to Lord Radnor that she is (or may be) pregnant with John’s child.I just wanted to cry while I was reading that part. To know that John had no hope when he was growing, and now he is going to be a father and continue his line touched me so much. It was such a character growth in the space of two books, including Lady Sophia’s Lover.
The sex scenes for this book is quite a bit different from the others in a way that this one actually includes sex techniques that John has learned from Gemma. One of note is the Tantric love making. I’m a married lady, but I haven’t heard (or goodness me, tried even) of this technique. If you’re interested in that kind of thing, this book is just for you!
Given that John is somewhat a sexpert, this book isn’t all steam though. There’s something that will just touch you and make you just love this book. I can’t think of any flaw of this book except for the part John and Gemma formed a “friendship”. That’s the only downside for me, and that isn’t even enough to lower down the rating I gave.
